'Barenaked Ladies Are Men' is an album of songs written for their previous release 'Barenaked Ladies Are Me'. Unfortunately the band were having a particularly prolific writing session during the prep work and ended up with too many songs, and decided to split them over two albums, but does this mean 'Barenaked Ladies Are Men' is full of B-side songs?
The good news is the answer to this is no! Barenaked Ladies fans will discover this is another album of delightful tunes filled with comedy and sometimes touching lyrics.
'Beautiful' shows the typical Barenaked Ladies attitude that has won them so many fans, in this case that they see a beautiful woman but understand that it might only be skin deep and the beauty will fade, but they'd still like a date, as does 'Running Out Of Ink'. 'Angry People' is a great example of a sing-a-long Barenaked Ladies song, while 'Maybe Not' is another upbeat classic with catchy riffs you really enjoy listening to.
However, 'Another Spin' doesn't sound very Barenaked Ladies-like, in a good way. It's one of these things that's difficult to put a finger on, but it's more Smash Mouthy / Beach Boy-ey than you'd normally expect. What ever it is, it works!
Fans will lap this up, they have managed to create an album of classic-sounding Barenaked Ladies tunes which still manage to be new enough to be something you want to listen to. It might not be new enough to win over critics though. It sounds as though Barenaked Ladies just had great fun playing around with their existing format, and luckily, it totally works for them. If you have been eagerly anticipating this release, it won't disappoint!
