The Cooper Temple Clause - Make This Your Own
Artist profile: The Cooper Temple Clause

Release Date: 22/01/07
Label: Sequel
Rating: ****

After a three year absence, 'The Cooper Temple Clause' are back with their third album. Minus one Didz Hammond (now in Dirty Pretty Things) and now on a new record label – Sequel – this is a bold step. Die-hard fans may have been unnerved at the accessibility of recent single 'Waiting Game', but make no mistake, this is no selling-out. 'Make This Your Own' is arguably their finest effort.

This album is far more assured, not as dark as their previous works but far from bland, this album is full of memorable numbers, whether it is the catchy hooks of quirky opener 'Damage', the rockier fare of 'Homo Sapiens' or stomping electronica-laced indie such as the superb 'Connect'. Some of the menace of old resurfaces on the brooding 'All I See Is You' and 'Once More With Feeling', and (bizzarest of all) 'What Have You Gone And Done' is full of the harmonies and hooks of Weezer and the late, great Grandaddy. 'Take Comfort' was originally set to be a b-side, a largely acoustic number with xylophone backing and simple structuring, but easily justifies making the album by echoing around your skull for days afterwards. Epic and ambitious, this surprising comeback album has some truly jaw-dropping moments.

The real quality of this album is in sounding utterly different from previous work while still being definitively The Cooper Temple Clause. They have created an album with one eye on the mainstream without sacrificing any of their style. Additional variations come from Dan, Ben and Tom sharing lead vocals across the album. Many fans might worry about this bold a step, but The Cooper Temple Clause have changed; but they haven't compromised anything, they have simply got much, much better.
