The Savage Jazz count themselves as being reggae. Bullshit. They're a whole new genre! At least, that's all we can tell from these three tracks, as they haven’'t been nice enough to give us the whole EP to eat up and sunbathe under.

Opening track 'Give It Back' brings the funk up right from James Brown's soul, bringing together impressionable lyrics; "I'll clean it up if it means that much to you - I'll clean up if it means that much!" (is Pete Doherty listening to this?), stuck together like a stick with the jammy guitar work of Alex Glover. Giles Bennett's vocal delivery, also, is more hiphop than 50 Cent ever will be.

'Mockingbird', meanwhile, will make you long for the forties. "Moving into forward motion, I'm in love with your emotion", it will make you awe as well as make you think, but overall is a much more beautiful track than 'Give It Back' – and here we were thinking it couldn't get any better.

We're almost scared for our lives before 'The Savage Jazz' (song) rolls around, as it would be a funny thing to be killed by perfection hitting your ears. And rightly so – this one's disturbing, and once again you could be fooled to thinking they're singing about Pete Doherty. "Cause he uses his soul; he looks young and thinks old" Oh, my...

Listen to 'Give It Back' while dancing on the beach in your daydream, listen to 'Mockingbird' while staring at the clock in school pretending you're sitting by a haven of the local un-destroyed creek, listen to The Savage Jazz anytime, anywhere, they will take you away and it will work perfectly. We just can't wait to get our grabby hands on the other two tracks, 'Show Me' and 'All Or Nothing', to see where else these lads can take us.

Everybody should be listening to The Savage Jazz, and hoping nobody else is paying attention – if only so they can nick their best tricks, because the temptation will be hard to resist.
