Ex Million Dead frontman Frank Turner surprised everyone with his forray into the folk / acoustic world, but with debut album 'Sleep Is For The Week' now on our shelves, he is about to impress us all.
Having toured relentlessly since the hardcore band's demise, Frank has more than likely visited your home town with his brand of folk punk. As an entertainer, he is excellent, an intelligent and very funny chap, his live shows are about much more than just the songs, but these attributes cleary come to the fore on the album.
If you've followed Frank's solo career at all, you'll recognise songs on here from his EP 'Campfire Punkrock' such as 'The Real Damage', 'Romantic Fatigue' and 'Worse Things Happen At Sea', but fully re-recorded complete with backing band, strings, keys, the works. All provided by Frank and his mates from Dive Dive. The extra dimension created by this breathes more life into already superb songs.
Lead single, 'Vital Signs' is a tale of life for Frank, what is important to him, namely friends, a good drink, and not money or a mortgage, but just being happy. The whole album infact is a collection of tales and experiences, both good and bad, a really honest portrail of himself and his life. And this is no more evident than on 'Father's Day', a stab at his father. With so many bands these days, the music tends to be the focal point, a hook or riff being the first thing to catch you, but with Frank, it's the lyrics that catch the ear, so to speak, he has such a wonderful knack for story telling, not that the music is bad either mind you!
Frank has clearly left performing hardcore music behind for the time being, and clearly loves what he's now doing. And to quote a line from the man himself, and that's fine by me.
