Vincent Vincent And The Villains - Johnny Two Bands
Artist profile:
Vincent Vincent And The Villians
Release Date: 16/10/06
Label: EMI
Rating: ****
Well this Johnny sounds a right greedy beggar. Two bands? Most struggling musicians would chew off their own arm to be in one musical outfit, and would probably spontaneoualy combust if they had the chance to be in two simultaneously. None of Vincent Vincent and the Villains need to worry about being part of anything other than their current guise however, with their 1950s Rock and Roll fused with a Fratellis-esque charm forcing you to twist your hips like your parents did 'back in the day'. 'JTB' seems to be an autobiographical affair despite the third person referrals, with lead singer Vincent telling a former skeptic "you always doubted the music that they made", the lyric tantamount to J.LO parading around in her jewels in front of her old friends from 'the block'.
With the right marketing this band could easily be the new Kooks, with the lead singer on a charm offensive that doesn't cease for 2:50, the Beach Boys style backing vocals transporting you back to an era where Happy Days and bobby socks were synonymous to the 'Will and Grace' and drainpipe jeans of our generation. Despite this self-indulgence, you can't help but be charmed by their head-bopping, leg-wiggling art-pop, the song's structure not too far from the ludicrously catchy 'Creeping up the Backstairs', with a hint of 'Narcissist' added in for yet more anthemic pleasure.
B-side 'Seven Inch Record' demands us to "turn it up loud and dance around the room" which can't fail to be adhered to when the Franz-esque fretwork kicks in from the intro. With this formula we can forget about Chinese New Year: 2006 is the year of the Vincent.
