Twin Atlantic - Vivarium
'Vivarium could well be one of the records of the year to date. Expect those screams to get a good deal louder yet.
If you're not entirely ignorant to the world around you, you're going to have noticed someone in your social circle screaming until blue in the face about Twin Atlantic over the past few months. A welcome addition to a wealth of Scottish bands being really quite amazing (We Were Promised Jetpacks and Dananananaykroyd amongst others), you can rest assured that it's not all deep-fried hype. 'Vivarium' is a bit of alright.
There's evidence aplenty that this is a band worth keeping an eye on. 'Lightspeed' is a hook-laden punch to the gut that harks back to the days when Idlewild weren't a bunch of wusses, mixed with a touch of early Biffy Clyro. Elsewhere 'You're Turning Into John Wayne' is comfortably within the brilliant category, stuttering into anthemic at will, while 'What Is Light? Where Is Laughter' sounds infinitely sharper for its re-recording post the 2008 single version.
The heart of 'Vivarium' is pretty obviously the six minute sparkler 'Caribbean War Syndrome', twisting and turning between lighters-in-the-air, stadium-sized piano ballad and something all together more crunchy. As close to epic as a band of Twin Atlantic's ilk can every get, it's Titanic with balls; no Celine Dion parallels intended.
Setting foundations for another band from north of the border who seem certain to enjoy even more devoted hordes in the near future, 'Vivarium could well be one of the records of the year to date. Expect those screams to get a good deal louder yet.
