Retribution Gospel Choir - 2

If you're a band going for a dramatic visual aesthetic you could do a lot worse than taking a leaf out of Retribution Gospel Choir's book. '2' is a stunning piece of art - so far as the packaging of the album, at least.

The Minnesota based band's appropriately titled second album is firmly ensconced within classic rock territory, which is fine as far as it goes but ultimately just has the feeling it's all been heard before and done better. Take 'Workin' Hard' for instance. It's pure Deep Purple territory and yes, its chorus is "Been workin' hard". Quite apart from our natural revulsion to the missing 'g' it's just the kind of thing you'd be listening to and your dad would say he loved: "This is proper music".

Where a band like Queens of the Stone Age manage to take classic blues and make it sound new and fresh, tracks like 'Poor Man's Daughter' just sound like standard classic blues. Not badly done by any means but unfortunately not much to grab you. Match that with verse/chorus/verse/guitar solo song structures and suddenly it's all just a bit ordinary. Oh look, there's even an acoustic ending with quiet singing over it. If you like your songs a 'little bit country' then this might be right up your street but it's just nothing even approaching new or exciting. Put on some Johnny Cash or Led Zepellin or Deep Purple instead - now that's 'proper music'.
