Pipes - Mother EP
London punks impress on their latest EP. Dalston-core!
This 3 track EP from East London based punk trio Pipes makes an excellent racket. The rasping opener ‘Mother’ mixes lo-fi riffage with vocalist Tom Baxter sounding not dissimilar to John Lydon in his PiL incarnation, and it all sounds like it was recorded in an underground air raid shelter in Dalston.
Any song written about David Icke called ‘D.I.C.K.’ (David Ickes Childhood Kite) has got to be good, and this second track is just that. Pipes' way with a guitar lick is reminiscent of early Rakes tunes, but don’t let this sway your judgement. For a band only formed a year ago their sound is tight and the melodies build to an intricate climax aided by yelping linguistics.
Closer ‘Asps’ is more of the same joyous noise and makes the prospect of their full length debut ‘Stay Indoors’ rather appealing. Already firm favourites with music press, this band will hopefully bring back a bit of the old fashioned punk that has been missing of late. Pipes' minimalism may be the key to their success, proving the old ‘less is more’ adage is very correct. Let’s hope we hear more goodness from this lot soon.
