Holy State - Holy State EP
Fresh-faced Leeds noise-pop quartet release impressive EP
Citing influences like Jesus Lizard and The Fall, Leeds gang Holy State have already appeared on Huw Stephens' ‘Music Sounds Better with Huw’ and opened up the Dance to the Radio stage at the Leeds Festival last year, marking their territory as a ‘one-to-watch.’
Their self-titled EP opens with ‘Brain Caves’, forcing you to immediately sit up and listen, kicking off as it does with a trumpet and incessantly catchy drumbeat. Ditching conventional repetitive beats, this opener is heavy-hitting, and shows how Holy State are attempting to forge their own path. Move on to ‘The Beaus and the Oglers’, and their true potential is unleashed. Although a shorter track, everything seems to work together to produce another brutally brilliant number, including a short interlude in the middle of the track. It brings us up to speed with their talent-of-plenty, before we move onto a slower and calmer ‘Skull on Skull’: perhaps the break in the action that's needed, as they prove that they can do impressive dynamics just as well as catchy riot pop. Finishing on ‘Palms’, you can immediately see that this will be a crowd-pleaser. Among the clattering drums, which becomes more complex as the track progresses, there's an energy that'll be perfect for a live setting. Holy State have found their rhythm, and they're giving us something unexpected. We approve.
