General Fiasco - Buildings

Since forming in early 2007, this trio of Northern Irish lads have provided support for some of indie’s most popular bands, including The Wombats and The Enemy, as well as playing their own well-received slots at the country's biggest festivals. After recording numerous demos, releasing a smattering of singles, and receiving countless airtime on Radio 1, General Fiasco finally treat us to their first full-length album. It was worth the wait.

'Buildings' launches straight into 2009 single, 'We Are The Foolish', with its irresistible “you better wake up/wake up/hey!” verse refrain. The tinge of Irish accent in frontman Owen’s vocals are charming but gritty, while 'Ever So Shy' creeps in with just bass and vocals, highlighting the soft edge in Owen’s voice, and the simplicity in that collaboration. Hit the chorus, and the effortlessness of their work shines through, giving proof that you don’t need a heap of studio trickery to create an enthralling album. Things slow down for title track 'Buildings', where their talent really shines, backed by hypnotising beats. It’s also the first time we really see an impact of backing vocals from Enda. The track slowly build up to an eruption of energy, as a short interlude of strings falls together to give an epic orchestral feel.

'Sinking Ships' provides another slow moment, where they get out the acoustic guitar and we see the sheer range that General Fiasco can produce - fan anthem 'Rebel Get By' is also a fine example of how their lyrics reflect their lives. Elsewhere, the heavy 'Dancing With Girls' is a pounding triumph and closer 'First Impressions' signs the album off with a calm and easy finish.

General Fiasco have already got their 2010 off to a great start, and this impressive debut confirms the fact we’ll be hearing a lot more from this lot in the near future.
