The Mules - Save Your Face
This former country band have produced a debut album of some weirdness, punkiness and funkiness; it's designed to make the listener want to dance and gurn, and not just in a barndancing way.
Like a 22nd century version of the Wurzels, it's all very jerky in a Futureheads/Young Knives sort of way. This five piece manage to make their music sound like it's from an eight piece through a blend of multi-instrumental studio trickery.
'Here to Help' and 'We're Good People' are particularly good and stand out as potential singles. They don't outstay their welcome either; the songs rarely last more than 3 minutes, the perfect pop length.
As stated previously, it does sound a lot like The Futureheads, and it struggles to break from those limitations. A bit more work is needed in terms of originality in order to really make a breakthrough. Still, an assured debut, and one which certainly promises good things from their future longplayers.Zahid Fayyaz
