Billy Talent - II
Billy Talent are not a very exciting band. Flogging their average pop-punk it's hard to take the Toronto based four-piece seriously. There is only so much you can expect from this, their second album, which again Gavin Brown has a hand in.
'II' tries to be angry, 'II'tries to be edgy and powerful, and 'II' fails on all the aforementioned counts. You see, Billy Talent try to do too many things when all they really need to do is stick to what they know best. They created some wistfully engaging tracks on their self-titled debut album, but somehow songs like 'The Navy Song' and 'Worker Bees' off II are frankly laughable.
Singer Ben Kowalewicz's itchy voice is a stumbling block as he seems to be morphing into the irritating one from Busted, and the songs undeniably lack charisma. The one saving grace on the album is 'Fallen Leaves' which has a straightforward approach with undertones of punk.
Even though the album is in itself a disappointment, you have to give it to Billy Talent. They have worked tirelessly playing show after show across the world and have built up quite the fan base. They have much to offer if you are a fan of pop-punk sqwark.
